The 2016 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Gordon Jago Super Group Final will be an All-English affair as Everton and Fulham both emerged victorious from their respective semifinals.
Winners of the Gordon Jago Super Group in 2013, Fulham defeated Brazilian side Fluminense 3-2 in their semifinal to advance to their second Gordon Jago Super Group Final in four years.
Meanwhile, Everton beat the Under-18 FC Dallas Academy team 3-1 to reach their first-ever Gordon Jago Super Group Final in their fourth appearance at the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup.
Fulham’s victory over previously-unbeaten Fluminense was seen as the larger upset of the two semifinal results, with the Cottagers having to come from behind to secure the win. A goal inside 20 minutes from Derek Ribeiro gave Fluminense a 1-0 lead, but goals in first-half stoppage time from Stephen Humphrys and Aron Davies gave Fulham a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Fluminense was able to pull-back an equalizer in the 78th minute through Caio de Olveira to tie the match at 2-2, but a late penalty scored by Jon Thorsteinsson gave Fulham the 3-2 win.
Everton had smoother sailing in their semifinal win, going 2-0 up within the game’s first 45 minutes. Goals from Jack Kiersey and Delial Brewster had the Toffees in a relatively comfortable position at the halftime break. FC Dallas got back in the match with 15 minutes to play as Hector Montalvo headed home a Devin Vega free kick, but Everton’s Nathan Broadhead scored with one minute left to play to kill off any chance of an FC Dallas comeback.
Fulham and Everton will play for the Gordon Jago Super Group title on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm at Toyota Stadium in Frisco.
