Conversation With the Captain: November 4,2015

FC Dallas center back and captain Matt Hedges knows his team faces elimination this weekend in the second leg of the Western Conference semi-finals. Hedges is confident though heading into the game on Sunday.

“We’re feeling fine,” he said. “2-1 is an OK result we would have preferred 1-1, but we knew we were going to have to come home and win anyway. We’re ready to come back home and do business here.”

Hedges is not one to read  much into what critics say about this team, but does not care what people have to say about the team.

“Announcers doing announcers stuff,” he said. “They say what they say to get a reaction. We don’t think we’re the underdog and we were first place in the Western Conference. We’re coming home and we will show why we were first place for a reason.”

Hedges knows how great the team has been at home this season and knows the pressure is on to get a win.

“It’s a huge advantage for us playing at home,” he said. “We want to win at home and if we win at home on Sunday we move on. That’s how we view Sunday.”

Hedges was pleased with the first, but knows they need to perform better in the second half of the game on Sunday.

“We played really well in the first half and got the away goal we were looking for,” he said. “The second half we got too spread out and their subs made an impact in the game. We need to get a 1-0 win on Sunday.”

Hedges is up for defender of the year in MLS this season and credits his teammates for his performance this season.

“Those guys made me look good so I give credit to them,” he said. “Props to them for helping me get nominated and making me look good.”

Hedges knows how well the defense played this year was a major reason why he got nominated for the award.

“We played better defensively this season,” he said. “I have more experience and thirteen shutouts along with the record we had this season got people to notice. Credit to the back line.”

FC Dallas faces the Seattle Sounders in the second leg of the Western Conference semi-finals down 2-1 on Sunday at 6:30 PM.
