The wild USL Western Conference is down to two teams. Oklahoma City Energy FC host the Los Angeles Galaxy 2 tonight at Taft Stadium. The winner advances to the USL Championship to face Eastern Conference finalist Rochester Rhinos.
The 2 seed Energy FC boast the best home record in the West. They have only lost once all year at home. However, they almost lost their second game last week facing Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in their first playoff game. The two sides battled hard. The contest was decided in a shootout after each team could not break the deadlock ending extra time 2-2. One of the Energy’s players of the season, goalkeeper Evan Newton, was the hero making two saves in the shootout. Oklahoma has a strong spine to their team from the front to the back. In goal Newton kept 10 clean sheets during the regular season and 89 saves. At the top, Danni König is second in league scoring with 21 goals.
The visiting Galaxy 2 will not be intimidated by Taft stadium. They had the league’s best away record. They earned more wins on the road than they did at home. Los Dos entered the playoffs as the 5th seed. The MLS reserve side has knocked out 4th seeded and defending champions Sacramento Republic FC as well as top seed Orange County Blues FC last week – on the road. Not only did they win they have not allowed a goal in the playoffs. Up top, Ariel Lassiter was the team’s leading goal scorer during the regular season and continues that trend with two goals in two playoff games. His partner pulling strings in the midfield is Raul Mendiola, the assist leader. Two games, two assists.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET. Each team is fighting to represent the Western Conference in the USL Championship and take on the USL Regular Season Champions, the Rochester Rhinos.
