Penalties and Fabian Castillo decided a crucial Western Conference match between FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake.

Goals from Tesho Akindele, his first since May 9th and Castillo would make the final score line 2-0 in favor of the homeside Dallas. A missed Javier Morales penalty would spell doom for the visiting Real Salt Lake.

Dallas opened the scoring in the 51st minute after Akindele won a penalty after a foul from Demar Phillips. Akindele converted his own penalty for 1-0. Real Salt Lake would have a chance to equalize from the spot in the 78th minute, but Javier Morales smacked the post, and the rebound was skied over the bar.

Dallas executed on the counter attack to finish off the match with a Castillo goal after the penalty miss.

FC Dallas was in control from the start, with a three chances inside of the first 10 minutes. Je-Vaughn Watson, who was active the entire half in attack, crossed in from the right side towards David Texeira. Texeira’s shot went just over the bar inside the first minute.

Dallas would continue the pressure but only force one save from U.S. international keeper Nick Rimando.  In the 4th minute, Fabian Castillo burst down the left side and found Akindele whose pass deflected to Texeira. Texeira’s shot would be saved by a scrambling Rimando.

In the 6th minute, captain Matt Hedges found Castillo breaking down the left side. The recent Colombia call-up would use step-overs to find space, but his shot hit the side netting.

Real Salt Lake would have one major chance which would come in the 36th minute after a sliding cross effort from Morales. Kyle Beckerman was there with an open net in front of him, but his touch pushed the ball just wide.

Homegrown keeper Jesse Gonzalez, who was making just his second in MLS, kept Real Salt Lake at bay with four saves. Castillo would help his keeper out and put the game to bed after the counter attack off the missed RSL penalty with a shot from just inside the box in the 79th minute.

Both clubs may have missing players next week due to events in this match. Real Salt Lake ran into a problem with yellow cards, as both Tony Beltran and Luke Mulholland with miss next week’s match due to yellow card accumulation that occurred in this match.

FC Dallas will have to keep an eye on Ryan Hollingshead, who took a blow and began to gush blood from his wound the 75th minute. Walker Zimmerman had to take his place. Hollingshead appeared to be ok as he ran back to the Dallas bench under thunderous applause.
