In recent weeks after returning from the FIFA U-20 World Cup where he represented the United States, freshly turned 20 years old FC Dallas homegrown academy product Kellyn Acosta has shown a spike in confidence. A rise in confidence that has made people take notice of his skill, and has bagged him his first two goals in MLS. Acosta has now scored in two straight matches.

“My confidence is very high. Oscar (Pareja) always encourages us to shoot, and we’ve been higher up the field allowing us to shoot more. My confidence is high, and I think I’m progressing tremendously.”

Acosta and his midfield partner Victor Ulloa, who is also a homegrown player, have a record of 6-0-2 in games in which they feature together in front of the FC Dallas backline. Acosta feels as if they have a great understanding of each other.

“It’s not just us, as a team we’ve been playing very well. More importantly, me and Victor have been pushing higher up the field to win the ball and help the attack. We recognize what we need to do. When one of us steps up, the other has to hold back and control the middle.”

Acosta scored one of the better goals of FC Dallas’ season against the Portland Timbers on Saturday night. Acosta burst forward with speed and corkscrewed a Timbers’ defender into the ground. He then rocketed a shot from the top of the box and into the back of the net. Acosta took his time, and learned from his past mistakes of missed chances from rushing his shot.

“I thought the defender was going to step up which helped me actually. I picked my head up, took my time and found the corner. I thought about taking the shot the first time, but I thought maybe I could get a little closer. After I cut past the first defender I knew I could shoot. Everything worked out.”

FC Dallas improved their lead in the Western Conference to four points ahead of second place LA Galaxy, and six points above the final playoff spot in which the Portland Timbers call home. Acosta understands just how important these three points are.

“This win is very big. The gap is getting bigger, and the team is going higher. We’re getting closer to reaching our goals of winning the Supporters Shield and making the playoffs.”

FC Dallas fans should be excited, as Acosta has built hype around him that he is living up to. He will continue to be a big part of FC Dallas’ winning ways as it gets down to crunch time towards the end of the season, and for seasons to come.
