The Austin Aztex have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Aztex (7-9-3) visited Scottsdale Stadium and defeated Arizona United SC (7-10-1) for the second time in a week.
The Aztex controlled the game early and grabbed a goal in the fifth minute of the match. Forward Kris Tyrpak played the ball to wing back Max Gunderson. Tyrpak continued his run into the box. Gunderson pushed the ball along the flank and sent in a cross. Unchecked Tyrpak rose above United SC’s back line to head in the game’s only goal. Arizona tried to push back and created several chances in the first half. Aztex keeper Devin Perales was up to the task and denied Arizona.
Arizona huffed and puffed to start the second half but never looked like scoring. Their leading scorer Long Tan was unavailable for the game and their attack was missing a focal point without him. The Aztex were able to maintain a solid defensive shape consistently denying United quality opportunities to score. The Aztex looked dangerous on the counter attack and spurned several chances to add to their advantage. The game ended 1-0 as the Aztex won six points from Arizona in a week.
A concern for the Aztex is an injury to Fernando Timbo. Timbo has formed a solid partnership with team captain Lance Rozeboom in the heart of the Aztex defense. He left the game in the first half of the match.
The two wins against Arizona have moved Austin from 11th to 8th place in the Western Conference. They are now three points outside of a playoff spot and are heading in the right direction. Whereas, United SC has fallen to 11th place and face a tough set of road games against OKC Energy FC, Tulsa Roughnecks, and LA Galaxy II. Austin’s next game is at home Saturday, August 1st against the Portland Timbers II. It will be a special night for Austin soccer as Landon Donovan, Brian Ching and Stuart Holden will be in attendance and participate in a half time game for charity.
