FORT WORTH, Texas _ Vaqueros playmaker Hilton Ngwa produced a stellar effort on Thursday despite the losing scoreline as the Vaqueros fell 4-3 to the top team in the NPSL South Central Conference at Texas Wesleyan University’s Martin Field.
The match was the Vaqueros’ third match in five days.
First place San Antonio (10-2-1, 31 points) opened the scoring in the 13th minute off an unfortunate own goal.
The Vaqueros (2-5-4, 10 points) responded almost immediately with the 15th minute. Ngwa’s classy footwork was on full display as he fed captain Tyler Humphrey for Fort Worth’s first goal.
However, the Corinthians responded quickly to take the 2-1 lead in the 19th minute.
Ngwa wasn’t done as he scored just before the half to narrow the lead to 3-2 for San Antonio at the break.
“I thought we created a lot of chances. The boys played well,” Vaqueros coach Mark Snell said. “I think in the first half we gave up some soft goals. Other than that we played very well for having only one day to rest. Now we have to get ready for Liverpool on Saturday.
The Corinthians once again built the two goal lead a few minutes into the second half.
Fort Worth narrowed the lead in the 64th minute to 4-3 with a solo strike from Jorge Deleon.
The Vaqueros return to action against the Liverpool Warriors at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Martin Field. In celebration of the 239th anniversary of the Fourth of July the Vaqueros will giveaway free American flag themed Vaqueros t-shirts to the first 239 fans that enter the gates on Saturday.
