The Texas Spurs bounced back from a tough weekend to take a confident win against the Austin Aces, winning 5-2, keeping them four points ahead of the Central Texas club in the Big Sky Division of the WPSL.
Playing at Dallas Christian College, Texas took a 2-0 lead into halftime despite Austin having some strong periods of possession, especially to start the half. After an initial push from the visitors, Kelly Machado played a quality deep pass into the Austin penalty area where Kendal Pryor put the ball home in the 8th minute to give the Spurs the lead. From there, Austin continued to try to break down the Spurs defense with no success. Then, in the 39th minute, Tareyn Blanton fed Olivia Garcia for the second goal of the game.
After the break, the Spurs came out strong, pressing to get a third to ice the game. In the 52nd minute, they got it when Alicia Reyes assisted Amanda McMullan to take a 3-0 lead. With Texas possessing the ball well, that appeared to likely close things out, but the Aces pulled a goal back soon thereafter through Jordan James. Each team scored again, with Hope Adams scoring for Texas and Bridgette Hamway tallying for Austin.
Amanda McMullan scored the final goal of the game as the game neared stoppage time after the Spurs kept the ball in along the Austin goal line and crossed the ball into the area where McMullan blasted it home. The victory leaves the Spurs in fourth place in their division, four points ahead of the Aces. The Spurs host the Real Salt Lake Women on Friday at Dallas Christian College before traveling to north to take on Oklahoma City on Sunday.
