San Antonio got exactly what they were expecting this past Saturday night against Ottawa Fury FC – a defensive battle that left each team walking away with 1 point after the 0-0 draw at Toyota Field. Considering that a pre-match injury cost the Scorpions their starting goalkeeper, that was a very positive result.
Trinity University and San Antonio native Matt Cardone was given the nod at keeper for his professional debut as Daryl Sattler went down with an injury during warm-ups. Since the Fury decided to dedicate the game to continually working on their defensive sets, the match didn’t yield many opportunities for either side.
Although the game did end in a draw, it saw the Scorpions earn at least one point in four of their last five matches to finish off the Spring Season with a record of 3W-3D-4L, leaving the Texas club in 7th place.
Hopefully San Antonio will be able to take that momentum they have established on defense and parlay that into some opportunities for the midfielders and forwards to capitalize on chances that present themselves. While most of the NASL teams take this break between the Spring and Fall seasons for transfers and international matches, the Scorpions will host Club Sport Cartaginés in a friendly on 6/27/2015 at 7:30pm.
