If you are here, you are a fan of Dallas area soccer, and as such, you really need to be finding time to follow all of the area soccer media, which includes resources you are probably already familiar with in websites 3rd Degree and Big D Soccer, but also includes two radio shows. That’s right, not one but TWO live radio shows that air on KTCK The Ticket and Dallas ESPN (KESN).
3rd Degree is the original independent news source covering Dallas professional soccer. Begun by television industry professional Buzz Carrick, 3rd Degree was a trailblazer as the first to bring you detailed practice reports – to the extent that other MLS teams were using them to scout the team then known as the Dallas Burn. As Carrick is now working for the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA, the site is operated by Peter Welpton (a name to remember), with local sports journalist Steve Hunt covering the beat. Hunt is hands down the hardest working reporter covering soccer in Dallas.
Big D Soccer
Big D Soccer is SB Nation‘s Dallas area soccer coverage. Its readership was built by Daniel Robertson, who now works for FC Dallas. Big D is currently operated and organized by Drew Epperley. Big D, like SB Nation in general, does a very good job of expanding the discussion beyond hard news coverage and bring analysis and extended fan voices to the web.
Soccer Today is the radio show on ESPN, and hosted by veteran soccer journalist Steve Davis and veteran soccer and NBA journalist Marc Stein. It airs Sunday mornings on 103.3 FM. Davis was the original soccer reporter covering Dallas professional soccer when MLS joined the sports landscape, and is currently writing for the FC Dallas official website and hosts their radio match broadcast on 100.7 FM, as well as a post-game show.
The Kickaround is the newest radio show and burst on the scene during the 2014 World Cup. Hosted by longtime radio pro and soccer enthusiast Peter Welpton, along with former Dallas Burn general manager and current Executive Director of the Dallas Cup, Andy Swift. It airs Saturday afternoons from 2-4 on 1310 AM/96.7 FM. It is also available on the Sports Day App – a cooperative effort between the Dallas Morning News and KTCK.
There is a fantastic back-story to The Kickaround, and Peter Welpton deserves some significant credit for leading the charge and managing the process to bring soccer to the area’s largest and most visible sports radio entity. Another part of that was the underground effort by our own David Chaffin, who championed P1s For Soccer Talk – a campaign that has seen clear success, but is far from over. There are some other writers and websites that cover FC Dallas from time to time, but these are the local ones that consistently produce more than once a week.
