Arizona United were able to hold off the Orange County Blues FC to get a 2-1 win to start the season with three points. Arizona started the scoring with a goal in the twentieth minute from newcomer Dennis Chin as he curled the ball in the net and gave Arizona their first goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, another newcomer for Arizona United got a goal as Robbie Derschang headed in a cross from Victor Munoz to give Arizona a 2-0 lead. In the thirty-sixth minute, Orange County cut the lead to one when a lob shot went over Carl Woszczynski. Arizona would hold on for the win as there was no scoring in the second half.
The star of the game for Arizona was at the goal keeper position in Woszczynski. The new goal keeper this season came up with a few key saves in order to get the win and the team defended well when they were up 2-0 early as he told Jerod Young of odfcnews.com
“Naturally, you want to be defensive and defend your lead,” Woszczynski said. “But once you drop back and defend, you just keep getting killed, balls getting dumped in, the other team has all the possession, but luckily we played well before we dropped into that shell.”
Arizona head coach Michael Dellorusso was also happy in the result in the win in a post-game interview with Jerod Young.
“They did what they needed to do to get the result,” Dellorusso said. “Like I told them after, not all of them are pretty but to grind it out like that shows their maturity and their willingness to fight. I’m happy with it, for sure.”
Arizona’s next game is at LA Galaxy II this Thursday at 7:30 PM. The game will be streamed on YouTube.
