Dallas Cup Kicks Off This Weekend

dallas cup logoNext week marks the 36th annual Dallas Cup. The youth soccer tournament is considered the best youth tournament in the world as teams from 47 states and over 100 countries have been in this tournament. Many stars of today have competed in this tournament including Clint Dempsey, Wayne Rooney, Chicharito, and Michael Bradley. Former stars who also played in it are David Beckham, Raul, and Landon Donovan.

Games kick off this Sunday with the marquee match featuring last year’s champion River Plate from Argentina take on Barclays U-18 champion Everton at 6:30 PM inside the Cotton Bowl Stadium.

The competition will be great as usual with teams trying to win the Boot and Ball trophy. The day begins with the FC Dallas u18 USSF Development Academy team taking on Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians at 12:30, then Tigres of Liga MX playing Valencia of Spain at 3:00. The Opening Ceremonies will be at 5:00 before the Everton-River Plate clash.

The Dallas Cup offers world class competition at all the u13 up through the u19 levels. Many of the world’s premier clubs will compete in the tournament, and past participants include Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, AJAX Amsterdam, Atletico Paranaense, FC Barcelona, Eintracht Frankfurt, Boca Juniors,  Manchester United, AC Milan, Sao Paulo FC, Chelsea FC, Kashiwa Reysol of Japan, UNAM Pumas, Celtic, Vasco de Gama, CD Guadalajara, Santos FC from Brasil, Club America, Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica.

Local teams have had success in such lofty competition, with Solar, the Dallas Texans, Andromeda and FC Dallas all notching significant achievements at various levels. Players like Clint Dempsey (New England Revolution, Seattle Sounders), Kenny Cooper Jr. (FC Dallas, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, New York Red Bulls), Drew Moor (FC Dallas, Colorado Rapids), Jose Burciaga Jr. (Sporting Kansas City) and Dillon Powers (Colorado Rapids) are all MLS players who played for local clubs.
