FC Dallas came into BC Place on a five game unbeaten streak and the Whitecaps came back home to Vancouver after a 1-1 draw at Salt Lake. Dallas came out in a 5-3-2. Oscar Pareja made it a point to boost the midfield. “I thought we clogged where we wanted.” said Pareja. Vancouver came out in a 4-2-3-1 with Darren Mattocks being the lone striker.
The Whitecaps opened the scoring in the 11’ minute with a quick counter attack. Mattocks went one on one with Raul Fernandez and made it look easy to make it 1-0 to the Whitecaps. Dallas was able to get one back in the first half when a Zach Loyd header hit the bar, bounced straight to Blas Perez who rolled it down to his foot and found twine to equalize in the 29’ minute.
The story of this draw was penalties. The first came on a mental lapse from Whitecap defender Carlyle Mitchell who was trying to avoid a headed back ball that Whitecap keeper David Ousted called for. Mitchell handled the ball in the box and PK Specialist Michel slotted the resulting penalty to make it 2-1 Dallas. In the 51’ minute FCD’s Moises Hernandez was whistled for an apparent handball inside the box. The penalty was awarded, but replays showed the ball was handled, but outside the box. Pedro Morales converted the PK to make it 2-2.
Raul Fernandez kept Dallas in the game with seven saves on the day including one on Pedro Morales in the 88’ minute on a vicious right foot shot that would have been the winner. Fernandez came up big six minutes into stoppage time to make a save on a Morales volley to hold the draw. FC Dallas goes to six unbeaten and improves to 8-7-6 and travel to face Chivas in Carson Sunday. Vancouver improves to 6-4-10 and head to Chicago to face the Fire Wednesday.
